Weather
I recommend visiting Saint Vincent all year long; however, the best time is between December and April.
Morning in Kingstown
As we dock in Kingstown, the heavens unleash a torrential downpour—a common occurrence in the Caribbean. Yet, within half an hour, the clouds’ part, revealing a sunlit paradise. The fresh rain gives way to a clear, balmy day, leaving behind a refreshed atmosphere.
Exploring and Seeking Coffee
Eager for a strong cup of coffee, I embark on a stroll through Kingstown’s bustling streets. The town hosts a blend of markets, shops, and colourful buildings, but alas, my quest for caffeine proves elusive. With Cammies and Greenhouse Café at Coconut Grove closed on Mondays and another option nowhere in sight, I retreat to Carib-Beans Superfoods Coffee House. Despite its touristy vibe, the coffee is decent, and the staff’s charm adds a pleasant touch.
Out into the Heat
With temperatures rising, I face a dilemma: the comfort of my air-conditioned suite or another adventure into town for lunch? Determined to enjoy the local cuisine, I venture back, determined to find something authentic and satisfying. This hunt doubles as my steps for the day!
"I am content—a happy traveller revelling in the delights of St Vincent."
A Culinary Delight
At VJ’s, I opt for pig’s foot soup, chicken roti, and a cold, refreshing Hairoun beer. Perched on a balcony overlooking the street, the breeze is a blessing. My beer arrives, condensation glistening on the bottle, and that first sip is pure bliss.
The soup is seasoned to perfection, featuring chickpeas, beans, carrots, and onions. As I dig deeper, I find the hearty “dumplin”—a dense dough ball adding substance to the soup. It’s reminiscent of my Oil Down dish from Grenada. The flavours meld beautifully, creating a comforting start to my meal.
Then comes the roti, hefty and fragrant. Inside, tender drumsticks are enveloped in a turmeric-rich sauce with potatoes, Madras curry, garlic, and coconut milk. Though tricky to eat, I dive in with a spoon, savouring the impeccable balance of flavours. The thin roti bread is the perfect accompaniment, completing a dish that might just be perfection.

Discovering Local Cuisine at VJ’s
Vinci Roti is my top choice, renowned for its curried conch roti and cow heel soup, but it’s disappointingly closed. Basil’s, with its cosmopolitan flair, also promises local dishes, but the lights are off and the place deserted. Finally, VJ’s offers salvation with its bustling bar and local flair.
Rain and Reflection
Walking back to the ship, the rain starts once more, yet I remain unfazed. With a full belly and the cooling touch of tropical rain, I am content—a happy traveller revelling in the delights of St Vincent.
