Weather
I recommend visiting Port Elizabeth, Bequia all year long; however, the best time is between December and April.
A Rainy Caribbean Morning
At 5.33 am, the rhythmic pounding of rain hammered down on my veranda, waking me abruptly. With a comforting cuppa in hand, I pushed the curtains aside, peering into what can only be described as biblical weather. The captain had warned us of a shower or two, but in true Caribbean fashion, this downpour promised to be brief. By the time I’d finished my morning routine, the sun was already beginning to sneak through.
Arrival in St Elizabeth
Bequia lacks deep-water berths, so our tender took us ashore to the quaint town of St Elizabeth—a short and calm 10-minute journey. As I disembarked, I found the town eerily quiet, with its shops and restaurants still asleep. I opted for a peaceful stroll along the beach walkway, a narrow yet charming path allowing leisurely exploration of coves without the challenge of steep roads. On my left were private beach homes, while occasional bars and rustic eateries peeked out from behind palm trees.
Strolling to St Margaret's Beach
My aim was to discover St Margaret’s Beach, a stunning stretch of sand that gained fame thanks to a visit from Princess Margaret herself. A small rocky incline and a few trees stand between me and the sandy expanse, adding a touch of adventure to the journey.
A Visit to Bequia Plantation Hotel
Before reaching the beach, I stumbled upon the Bequia Plantation Hotel, a gorgeous spot set slightly back from the beach path. Light, open, and airy, it beckoned me in. Famished from the morning’s activities, I decided to settle in, Mojito in hand, to explore the menu.

The Culinary Experience
Now, I must confess, the menu wasn’t quite my style. With pizzas, pastas, and burgers dominating the list, I was initially tempted to venture to Jack’s Beach Bar for more local fare. But seated comfortably, I decided to dive into a smoky corn chowder with herb croutons and crispy bacon and barramundi fish and chips with tropical curry tartare sauce and mixed greens.
The chowder was delicious, with soft sweetcorn and melting potatoes perfectly seasoned and complemented by crispy bacon. However, the croutons were disappointingly soft and stale. The main course featured freshly caught barramundi, its crisp coating a testament to impeccable cooking, though the frozen chips were rather standard. What truly stole the show was the tropical curry tartare sauce—a revelation I plan to recreate at home.
