Morning Arrival in San Juan
We sail into San Juan harbour at the crack of dawn, greeted by a playful pod of dolphins escorting us into port. It’s an uplifting sight that never fails to put a smile on my face. With the sun beaming down, I sip my morning coffee while waiting to disembark. As expected with American ports, the customs process is thorough, but after countless journeys, I’ve learnt to take it in my stride.
The Charm of Old San Juan
Once ashore, I’m captivated by the mix of art deco architecture reminiscent of Cuba and vibrantly coloured buildings lining the streets. Each corner of San Juan offers stunning squares and historic sites, making it a delight to explore. Plaza De Armas is one such square, where I stumble upon Café Cuatro Estaciones. Since 1994, this charming little kiosk has served exceptional coffee, cakes, and pastries. The queue is long, but each sip of their rich coffee and bite of their custard-filled pastry is worth the wait.
Exploring the Sights of Puerto Rico
After indulging at the café, I set off on foot towards an old fort perched on a peninsula. The walk takes me past vibrant sea-facing houses, bars, and restaurants—each painted in eye-catching hues that are typically Caribbean. The beauty of San Juan is in its details: from the ornate doors to the meticulously maintained buildings, there’s inspiration at every turn.

A Culinary Encounter
As hunger strikes, I wander back into town, eager to find a local dining spot. Eventually, I discover a cosy family-run taco bar. While the menu leans towards Tex-Mex—a far cry from authentic Puerto Rican fare—it still offers a delicious, satisfying meal. My choice: three white fish tacos with guacamole, grilled peppers, and queso. The fish is perfectly cooked, fresh and full of flavour, paired beautifully with a cold beer.
