Weather
I recommend visiting Tortola all year long; however, the best time is between March and June.
Morning Arrival in Tortola
We arrived on a slightly overcast morning, the heat greeting me as I stepped off the temperature-controlled ship. Tortola, known for its yacht-filled harbour, serves as a base for upscale sailing companies. While the town itself is modest, the island promises more to those willing to explore further afield.
A Search for Local Flavours
My first stop is the marina, a short 15-minute walk from the port. It’s a smart area with a small restaurant and hotel, complete with a champagne bar. Island Roots Café becomes my first port of call. Cosy and shaded by palm trees, it offers excellent coffee and snacks. With no promising leads on local cuisine nearby, I decide to return to tI’ve sailed into Barbados several times, but this visit feels different as if I’m re-discovering an old friend. The sun rises early, casting a golden glow over the port, and by 8 AM, I’m ready to embrace the day. Despite the bustling activity from other cruise ships in the harbour, I focus my attention on Bridgetown. This quaint town may have a few new beachside bars and restaurants, but its charm remains untouched.

Discovering Rotiman
"Tortola offers a unique charm that’s simply irresistible: where the flavours are as vibrant as the scenery."
A Delightful Culinary Experience
Inside, the menu offers an array of dishes like jerk chicken cakes and shrimp cakes, but my eyes fix on the roti. I order the curried chicken with bones, served with curried chickpeas, spinach, carrots, and potatoes.
When it arrives, accompanied by a fresh salad and slaw, the aroma is enticing. The chicken is tender, bursting with flavour, while the chickpeas and spinach add a delightful texture. It’s the best roti I’ve had since my early days in Barbados in the ’90s. It’s a reminder to never judge a book by its cover.
