Weather
I recommend visiting Antigua all year long; however, the best time is between December and April.
A Cozy Locale in St. John's
St. John’s is known for its warm atmosphere and friendly locals, making it easy for visitors to feel right at home. I found Hemingway’s tucked away just a few streets from the quay, and despite getting a little lost, the helpful locals quickly pointed me in the right direction. Dining on the first floor at Hemingway’s provides a lovely view of the vibrant streets below, adding to the overall charm of the experience.
Ambiance and Hospitality
As you step inside Hemingway’s, you’re greeted by whitewashed floors and walls, creating a bright, airy ambience that’s both relaxing and vibrant. The friendly staff enhance your dining experience with their warm smiles and attentive service. You’ll genuinely feel the welcoming spirit of the Caribbean.

A Flavourful Menu of Caribbean Favourites
The menu at Hemingway’s is straightforward yet enticing. It offers a selection of Caribbean favourites that will tempt your taste buds. Expect to find mouthwatering options, including conch, lobster, and crab dishes—classic staples of Caribbean cuisine. During my visit, I chose the saltfish buljol and curried goat served with mixed vegetables, rice, and fried plantain.
Saltfish Buljol : A Must-Try Starter
My saltfish was lightly stewed with tomatoes and garlic, resulting in a perfect balance of flavour without being overly salty. Paired with garlic bread, it was a delightful starter that I highly recommend. Saltfish, known by various names such as bacalao or klippfisk, is a Caribbean delicacy I always enjoy, both eating and cooking.
I have always been a fan of saltfish, both in eating and cooking. My saltfish curry in Dominica was even better (see blog).
Curried Goat : A Flavourful Main Course
For my main course, I indulged in the curried goat, which was tender and braised in a thick, flavourful broth enhanced with onions and spices. The robust flavour of the goat paired excellently with the accompanying vegetables, braised rice, and fried plantain—truly a hearty and satisfying meal. This unique Caribbean dish is not for the faint-hearted but is a must-try for adventurous eaters.
