St Kitts a Food Adventure
I was really looking forward to visiting St Kitts as I was meant to be here a few years ago, but bad weather put pay to that. I only had a day, so I really wanted to get out and see the island. St Kitts and its close neighbour, Nevis, are beautifully lush with fantastic beaches, and have a very relaxed feel, plus they didn’t seem that busy, which may be because it was a Sunday.

Touchdown in St Kitts
Stepping off the boat onto St Kitts’ sun-drenched dock, I smell salt, sunshine and that unmistakable promise of Caribbean flavours. At last, I had made it to St Kitts, and now, with just a day to explore, I was determined to eat, see and soak up as much as possible. And what a day it turned out to be.
Basseterre Bustle and a False Start
I wandered into the heart of Basseterre, the island’s main town, as the heat built steadily — the kind of heat that makes you think ice cold Carib, right now, please. I found my first pit stop near the port, a small tourist hub with chilled beers and big smiles. But when I hunted down the lunch spot I’d researched! It was closed. Just… closed. I mean, nothing says Caribbean unpredictability quite like that.

Into the Hills - Straight to Paradise
Hot and slightly parched, I headed back toward the taxi rank and struck up a chat with Irini, a retired local now driving for fun and fares. She recommended a place half an hour away: The Lion Rock Bar on Cockleshell Beach. Honestly, I’d jump at a suggestion with a name like that — it promised attitude and atmosphere.
We struck up a deal to take me there and back and set off, leaving the town and heading up into the hills, roads blissfully clear, until Irini pulled over at what she declared the best view on the island. And she wasn’t wrong. With neighbouring Nevis hazily etched on the horizon, I snapped a picture that’ll haunt my screensaver. As you can see, the roads are empty, and so was the Lion Bar when I arrived.
"Spontaneity, sunshine and Caribbean soul food left me planning my return."
Lunch at The Lion Rock Bar - A Beach Bar Masterclass
A beautifully simple open-plan bar, a cool breeze rustling through the palms, and a laid-back vibe that whispered, take a load off. The owner welcomed us like old friends, explaining that his mother still cooks up the magic his father started years ago. The menu was short — just eight main dishes — but perfect.
We chose jerk chicken and ribs, both served with rice and peas, grilled plantain, a fresh coconut salad and seasonal veg.
The jerk chicken had that deep smoky colour, with a nice spice kick, and flavour that danced between fire and sweetness — as good as anything I’ve had across the Caribbean. (and as good as I had in Georgetown, Grenada, see blog).
The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender with a gentle sweetness that paired beautifully with the tangy sides.
The rice, plantain and roasted squash! Proper Caribbean soul food.
Washing it all down with a Carib beer in hand, I just sat back and took in the view — pure bliss.
My honest take
Great food that is just what it is, bloody loved it and just what you need in a beach bar. As you can see, the view whilst we eat is breathtaking and really takes my breath away.
By now the restaurant is filling with Sunday afternoon punters, some off the boats, plus lots of locals. Mama pops out to see if we are happy, and so does her son. I just have to soak up the sun and have a quick nap after my lovely lunch on the bars’ sun loungers at no extra cost. You must come here if you visit St Kitts, it’s well worth the taxi journey, and you won’t be disappointed, trust me.
Journeys End
Irini is bang on time, and we set off back to town. She tells me about her family and that she is now retired and just does a little taxi driving to keep busy. In no time, we are back in town, and we say our goodbyes. I didn’t get as much time as I wanted to explore the whole island fully, so the plan is to come back and nip over to Nevis, and if it’s as good as what I’ve seen and had today, then I’m in for another treat.
If your trip to St Kitts is anything like mine, with a touch of spontaneity, a heap of sunshine, and plenty of incredible food, you’ll leave planning your next visit before you’ve even unpacked. I certainly will.
